In November, The Trump Administration’s policy change proposal for people receiving disability benefits had unfortunately received little publicity. This could potentially strip disability coverage for hundreds of thousands of Americans. It is currently open for public comments now thru January 31st.
There will be a new category to the qualification list and reviews for continuing Social Security Disability Benefits would become more frequent. Social Security Administration assigns applicant’s to one of three categories for eligibility : 1 – Medical Improvement Expected, 2 – medical improvement possible, 3 – medical improvement not expected. The new proposed category is medical improvement likely.
This new fourth category would affect 4.4 million recipients, many are children and a Social Security classification for people ages 50-65 with no income and poor health called Step 5 beneficiaries. Step 5 recipients will have more reviews and it will be more difficult for them to find compliance with the new review process therefore placing their benefits in danger.
Critics of this plan are finding a similar theme to this and also the proposed food assistance cut to 700,000 + people by the administration(article coming.)
Executive Director of the progressive advocacy group called Social Security Works was quoted by Common Dreams saying that this rule change “is the Trump administration’s most brazen attack on Social Security yet.” Also, last week a report from The Philadelphia Inquirer stated “those already receiving disability benefits are subject to so-called continuing disability reviews, which determine whether they are still deserving of compensation for an injury, illness, or other incapacitating problem as their lives progress.”
